Sherman Oaks, CA – After more than three decades of dedication and leadership, John Hirn is stepping away from his role as head coach of the Notre Dame High School boys and girls water polo programs. His impact on the school and its student-athletes is immeasurable, and his departure marks the end of an incredible chapter for Notre Dame Athletics.
Hirn began his coaching career at Notre Dame High School in 1990 and has been the heart and soul of the girl's water polo program since its inception, serving as the only head coach in school history. His passion, mentorship, and commitment helped shape the program into what it is today.
One of his most memorable achievements came in 2018 when he led the girl's team to a CIF Division 5 Championship, a testament to his dedication and leadership. On the boys' side, he has been a steady presence for many years, guiding and inspiring countless student-athletes in and out of the pool.
“John has been more than a coach—he has been a mentor, a role model, and a constant source of encouragement for our student-athletes,” said Alec Moss, Notre Dame Athletic Director. “His impact on this program and our school community will be felt for years to come. We are incredibly grateful for all he has given to Notre Dame.”
While Coach Hirn will no longer be on the pool deck, he will remain a vital part of the Notre Dame community, continuing his role as a dedicated educator in the Science Department. His influence will continue to shape students in the classroom, just as he has done in the pool.
Notre Dame High School will begin the search for new leadership for its water polo programs in the coming weeks.
